SFTP troubleshooting

The error messages your program shows, and what to do about each one.

“Cannot establish FTP connection to an SFTP server. Please select proper protocol.”

(FileZilla.) Your program reached Pagehaus but is speaking FTP. Choose SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol in the Site Manager, or type the host as sftp://sftp.pagehaus.app in Quickconnect. Other programs word it differently, but any error mentioning FTP, SSH or a “welcome message” on port 2022 has the same fix: choose SFTP.

“Connection timed out” or “Connection refused”

  • Check the port is 2022. Ports 21 (FTP) and 22 (SSH) are closed or used for other things.
  • Check the host is sftp.pagehaus.app, not your site's address.
  • Some workplace and school networks block unusual ports. Try another network, such as your phone's hotspot.
  • After many failed sign-ins in a row we block your address for about 30 minutes, to stop password guessing. Wait, then try again with the right details.

“Authentication failed”, “Access denied”, “Permission denied (password, publickey)”

  • The username is your site name (yoursite), not your email address. Extra logins look like yoursite.name.
  • The password is your Pagehaus password, unless you gave the login its own password in the SFTP tab.
  • Confirm your email address first: SFTP stays off until you click the link we emailed you.
  • Extra logins only work on Personal and Pro plans, and not while they're switched off in the SFTP tab.

“Unknown host key”, “The server's host key is unknown”, “Host key verification failed”

The first warning is expected: compare the fingerprint with the ones on Connecting with SFTP and accept it. If your program says the key has changed and it doesn't match our list, don't connect, and tell us.

Uploads fail: “Permission denied” or “Failure”

  • The login may be read-only (set in the SFTP tab).
  • Your account may be out of storage: check the Account page.
  • The Free plan doesn't allow programs and installers (.exe, .apk, .msi, …).
  • A login limited to one folder can't write outside it.

My changes don't show on the site

  • Reload the page without the cache: Ctrl+Shift+R (or ⌘+Shift+R).
  • Make sure you uploaded into the right folder: your home page is index.html in the top folder.
  • File names are case-sensitive: About.html and about.html are different pages.
