Password-protect a site or folder
Show a client a preview, share drafts with a few people, or keep a page off the public web until it's ready. On the Personal and Pro plans.
Set it up
- Open your site's Access tab.
- Under Folder, type
/for the whole site, or a folder such as/clients/acme. Everything inside the folder is protected, including images and CSS. - Choose a password of at least 6 characters, and optionally a heading for the password page, such as "Preview for Acme Ltd".
- Share the password with the people who should see it.
What visitors see
A simple page with your heading and a password box. Once they enter the right password they can look around that area for 7 days in the same browser. Search engines see only the password page and don't index it.
Changing or removing it
- Change password lets nobody in until they have the new one, including people who entered the old one.
- Make public removes the password straight away.
- A folder can have its own password inside a protected site; the folder's password is the one asked for there.
Good to know
- Contact forms keep working inside protected areas.
- It keeps casual visitors and search engines out; it isn't encryption. Don't put truly secret files on any website.
- Includes copy a file into the page that includes it, so don't include protected pages in public ones.
- If you move to the Free plan, existing protection stays on; you just can't add more.
